About the course

Do you want a job where you’ll be working with your hands, building things from scratch and creating brand new parts and tools for certain tasks? If you have an eye for detail and can work to complex drawings, then a Tool Making Apprenticeship at City College Plymouth will train you for a future as a tool making engineer. A toolmaker creates parts and tools for use in manufacturing plants. They typically work in a specialised factory using different hand tools and large robotic equipment to produce new parts and machines. As an apprentice, you’ll be earning while you learn, whilst studying a suite of qualifications including the NVQ in Performing Engineering Operations and in Engineering Production. As well as undertaking training at City College to build your knowledge and qualifications, you’ll be earning a wage while you work and gain the skills required to make a career in the Engineering industry. The intermediate Apprenticeship gives a complete introduction and specialist training for those who wish to be a professional tool maker and is equivalent to five GCSEs at grades A*-C (9-4). The advanced Apprenticeship is a level 3 qualification equivalent to three A Levels, providing you with an opportunity to continue your studies at university-level once you complete the advanced Apprenticeship.
