On the English side of your degree, you will get a firm grounding in English Literature, from the Middle Ages to the present, while our unique pathway structure enables you to pursue specialist areas of literary studies to suit your academic interests. After core modules in your first year, pathways in the second and final years provide you with flexible but coherent learning, focusing on English Literature, North American Literature, World and Comparative Literature or Literary and Cultural Theory. About this course

English and Italian is a degree with a strong and distinctive comparative approach. It has been specially designed for those who wish to begin or pursue a study of Italian language and culture whilst continuing to study the English tradition, as well as exploring interactions between the two. Throughout your degree you will study Italian language at an appropriate level. Optional modules range from studying contemporary Italian culture to comparative literature modules. You will spend either the second or third year of your course abroad in Italy.

Our graduates work for organisations including: United Nations, the Ministry of Defence, British Airways, BBC Sussex, Nestle. Job roles include: Lead European marketer, Freelance translator & Editor, German Language Teacher, Project Controller, European Graduate trainee, Events Assistant.

A level: AAB including A Levels in English Literature and any modern language.
IB: 36 points including 5 at Higher Level in English Literature and in any modern language.

Course programme

We offer a wide variety of modules exploring English and Italian Literature.

How will I learn?

You will have around 12 hours of contact time per week. We employ a variety of teaching styles, including: lectures; seminars of about 15 students, in which the emphasis is on student participation; and written and spoken language classes in small groups. You will spend the rest of your time studying independently, preparing for classes, reading the primary texts, writing essays and working on your language skills.

How will I be assessed?

We will track your progress through language assignments, essays, presentations, portfolio submissions and examinations (written and oral). Throughout your course you will receive detailed, personalised feedback to help you to improve your skills.
