Introduction

The degree covers the major texts and authors from all periods of English literature, and also gives students the opportunity to develop their own special interests. Mandatory period units present the historical development of English literature, while optional special subject units explore particular authors, topics, or genres. Small-group teaching is the foundation of this degree, which allows it to be closely integrated into the research culture of the department. There may be an opportunity for Single Honours students to spend one teaching block of the second year at a university in Europe or America.

Teaching and Learning
Approaches to Poetry, Approaches to Shakespeare, and Literatures 1, 2, 3 and 4 are taught in one-hour tutorial groups (six to eight students), supplemented by three one-hour lecturers (typically 80 students) per week. Critical Issues and special subjects are taught in two-hour seminars (eight to 15 students).

Assessment
Assessment of your degree class is based on marks awarded in your second and third years; first-year marks are not considered.

In your first and second years, your marks come from a combined system of continually assessed essays and sit-down examinations, heavily weighted towards the former.

In your third year, your marks come from continually assessed essays.
