GCSE Grade D (or, if a mature candidate with no formal English exam, university degree/professional qualification or similar). Candidates should bring their original certificate or results slip to their interview.
Below GCSE Grade D/no formal qualifications - Level Skill Builder (the test will take approximately one hour).
Candidates achieving Level 1 Skill Builder who are either working towards Level 2 or show some skills at Level 2 will be asked to take a Basic Literacy test (30 minutes' duration) and would be expected to achieve a satisfactory level.

Information about the courseThe course aims to enable you to develop your skills in reading, writing and understanding the English language, and to achieve a GCSE qualification.
Course content1 How to understand the spoken word and develop the capacity to express yourself effectively in a variety of speaking and listening activities, matching style and response to audience and purpose.
2 How to read accurately and fluently; understand and respond to and enjoy literature of increasing complexity drawn from the English Literary heritage and from other cultures and traditions; and analyse and evaluate a wide range of texts.
3 How to construct and convey meaning in written language using correct grammar and standard English, matching style to audience and purpose.
AdditionalityStudents will need to provide their own textbooks (play and novel), as specified by the tutor.
AssessmentCoursework represents 20 of the overall grade - both oral and written (1500 words) assessment
