English Language, A2-level
AS & A Level
About the Course
You will study the ways in which we use language to inform, persuade or entertain, for example through newspapers and advertising. You will explore how writers and speakers use language to convey ideas, feelings and attitudes. At both AS and A2 level you will read and study a wide range of texts such as reviews, travel writing, biographies, letters and short stories. You will learn new terminology and techniques to help you develop your own writing skills as well as your skills of analysis.
At AS Level there are two coursework tasks. You will produce a piece of original fictional writing accompanied by a commentary. You will also investigate the use of spoken language in an area of your choice in the media. In the exam you will be tested on your knowledge of how the English language is used in two or more texts linked by genre or theme.
At A2 Level you will produce coursework in which you conduct a language investigation into the use of spoken or written English or a combination of the two. You will also produce writing for a specific purpose, accompanied by a commentary. In the exam you will analyse the spoken language used in more than one text and comment on language changes over time.
AS or A2 English Language can be combined with AS or A2 English Literature. It cannot be combined with English Language and Literature.
