What is this course about?
The course is designed to offer opportunities to explore English Literature through time, across cultures, genres and genders and to encourage the development of wide and close reading skills and independent judgements.

What topics will I study?
  • At AS you will study two 19th century novels, followed by two poetry texts and one play, both 20th century; there will also be one wider reading text.
  • At A2 you will undertake a course of reading comprising three texts from different periods, followed by a Shakespeare play paired with a related drama text and a pre-1800 poetry text.


How will my work be assessed?
  • At AS you will be assessed by an examination at the end of the year and by a coursework folder comprising one prose study and one creative writing response.
  • At A2 you will be assessed by an examination at the end of the year and by one piece of extended coursework on three texts from different periods and genres.

You will need to learn to analyse literary texts clearly and accurately, using the appropriate terminology and literary concepts. You will need to enjoy reading widely and be willing to discuss your ideas and listen to those of others.

What knowledge do I need to succeed?
You do need to be genuinely interested in what literature is and its importance.

Are there any specific entry requirements?
A minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English.

What are the lessons like?
