Course programme
All students starting A-level English courses will be following the new specifications introduced by the exam boards, in line with government policy. We will be offering two year A-levels only (whereas the split AS and A2 model of delivery will still be on offer for many other subjects in the College, as they are not all in the first wave of government changes).
For English, the new programmes will give us the time to explore subjects, texts and language in greater depth and will enable students to develop their understanding and skills more fully. It also means there will be no ‘real’ exams at the end of the first year.
We are excited to be able to offer a wider range of texts and some innovative modules as part of the new courses.
All of the courses are centred on developing writing skills and styles, close reading of texts, interactive teaching and individual support for students.
It is possible, subject to progression guidance from the College, to take A-level English Language and A-level English Literature alongside each other as separate A-levels, but the A-level English Language & Literature course cannot be combined with either of the other two A-levels.
All three courses involve 80% exam and 20% coursework.
The entry requirements for A-level English courses are subject to the usual College minimum requirements, including having a grade C in the related GCSE course.
It will not be possible in 2014-15 to take any of the A-level English courses as an express one-year course, as this is a transition year for new and old exam specifications.
Students on the A-level English Literature course will be able to engage with an inspiring and challenging set of texts, which range from Shakespeare to the present day. There is a very strong focus on group discussion and close analysis of literary works, enabling students to develop their understanding of literature and their grasp of literary terminology. The course will help students to develop their critical reading abilities and independent learning skills and hopefully, encourage wider reading and a love of literature! The texts studied for the course will include: Nineteenth and Twentieth Century poetry; Shakespeare, a Jacobean drama and a modern play; the modern novel and a range of ‘unseen’ material, which will provide the opportunity to analyse all sorts of exciting poems and prose extracts in depth and detail.
