Course programme

BA (Hons) English Literature
Mode: full-time

In English, three factors dominate our thinking about the subject:

  • That it should provide excitement about, insight into, and enjoyment of, some of the most intellectually stimulating and emotionally rewarding literature written in English, and give the opportunity for some insight into English Language;
  • That it should prepare students with the skills and experiences necessary to move into the career of their choice;
  • That it should allow students as much freedom as possible to explore their interests and undertake their own research, while always being able to obtain the support they need to fulfill their potential.

The course is built around 8 core modules but you then choose your other 10 across a wide range of literature written in English. The range of literature covered is extensive and the course is designed so that you can concentrate on particular areas or give yourself a broader approach. There's plenty of flexibility and there are a number of pathways that you can select:

You might choose to have a chronological run through the 'canon' of English Literature, studying 'the greats' such as Chaucer, Shakespeare, Austen, Keats, Wordsworth, the Bröntes and Backett on your way;

Or perhaps you want something that focuses more on contemporary literature to discuss the issues of gender, race or postcolonialism by looking at writers such as Carter, Churchill, Pinter and Ishiguru.

Or maybe you prefer to concentrate on drama whether medieval, renaissance or contemporary.

Whatever you choose, you will get teaching of the highest quality that puts you first.

Our approach means that we are student focused but this mentality is underpinned by a scholarly background of high order supported by excellent resources and facilities. Staff are highly qualified and experienced. All staff in English have either a postgraduate qualification such as a Masters degree or doctorate, or a teaching qualification such as a PGCE and most tutors in English have both of these. This ensure that all your teaching, not just lectures, is led by highly qualified and experienced staff, not postgraduate students.

Course Details
In your first semester you complete three compulsory, introductory modules. In semester two you do a Creative Writing module and then choose two further 20 credit modules. In your second year, you are introduced to critical theory and this is your only compulsory module in this year. In your final year, you either do a long essay of 8,000 words or do a work placement module followed by a shorter essay of 5,000 words. You also select two more modules in each semester.
