Our English Literature MA seeks to train scholars in the study of writing and culture, across a range of periods, national traditions, and genres. It has an open and flexible study route. You’ll be able to choose from a number of modules that address a range of issues and topics in the field of English Literature.

Modules range from literary and cultural theory to an assortment of Anglophone and translated literature in English, from Shakespeare to Victorian, North American to Postcolonial writing. Students take four modules over the duration of their course, two in Autumn and two in Spring, of which one must be an critical theory module. You will also undertake a dissertation project, which you will develop with a specialised supervisor.

About this course

Recent graduates have gone on to careers within Journalism, theatre direction, teaching, charity sector work, broadcasting, journalism, public relations, market research, publishing and studied PhD programmes across the UK.

65% (or equivalent) in an undergraduate degree in English literature or a related degree. Applicants may be required to provide a writing sample to demonstrate suitability for the course.

This programme has optional modules to choose from to allow you to achieve the required credits to successfully complete the award. Teaching:

Students participate in two hour weekly seminars for each module. They also can attend lectures and seminars across the Faculty and the University by recognised experts on key and current topics in the field of Arts and Humanities. Students also undertake a mandatory dissertation project (16,000) words. They also receive formal research methods training in the first term and receive guided work on their dissertation proposal in that time. Work on their dissertation project commences with an assigned supervisor and runs throughout the remainder of the course.

Assessment:

Each module (apart from the dissertation) has a requirement of assessed work (up to 6,000 words) on a topic devised by the student and agreed by the module leader. All assessments are double-marked.
