Advanced English for Interpreters

Course review:

Interpreting is a skill which requires proficiency in two languages. However, as most interpreters have English as our first or dominant language, our focus when training is on the acquisition and refinement of BSL: complacency can exist about perceived expertise in our mother tongue.

This course will remind students that English is also a core skill; it aims to convert complacency into a drive to improve. It will make students more aware of their current standard of English, highlight unexplored areas for growth, and provide them with the tools to develop and enhance their skills.

This two day course will cover a range of topics including:

What is ‘good English’ and why is it important for Interpreters?

• Do we know grammar, and do we need to?
• Constructing efficient and effective sentences
• Solecisms (or common grammatical gaffes)
• Strategies to increase active and passive lexicons
• Where Modern English came from
• How new words come about and how their meanings can change over time
• Figurative Language: when words don’t mean what they say
• Formality scale, Register and code switching
