Course programme

Syllabus

The programme is run within the School of Biological Sciences by the Discipline of Plant & Soil Science with additional input from the School of Medical Sciences and local research institutes. The degree programme comprises a series of taught courses over the first two terms. The courses cover concepts and principles important in environmental microbiology, microbial ecology and environmental biotechnology. Particular emphasis is placed on the application of molecular techniques and the use of genetically modified microorganisms in the environment. Further courses cover biodegradation, bioremediation and remediation technologies. The taught courses are followed by a four month research project.

Assessment

The programme is assessed by continuous assessment of coursework, examinations covering the course contents, and on the basis of performance in a research project. The format of the project submission is as a manuscript for a scientific journal; laboratory and field notebooks are also assessed.

Teaching

The courses are delivered by a combination of lectures, tutorials and laboratory practicals. Throughout the first two terms, guest speakers give presentations on research related to the environmental sciences. Over recent years an increasing emphasis has been placed on the development of transferable skills in our courses; these skills are used in the MSc research project. For the four month project, students, in conjunction with their supervisor(s), develop and test a hypothesis, and it may be based in the laboratory and/or field. The project is an excellent opportunity to carry out research as a member of an active research group.

Dedication

Full-time.
