About this course


The course aims to enable understudies to: Show understanding of units of measure and dimensional analysis

Have a sound grasp of basic numerical manipulation techniques

Be able to use mathematical and graphical techniques to describe scientific phenomena

Apply appropriate data analysis and statistical techniques to scientific data using Excel, Matlab and SPSS computer packages and correctly interpret the outcomes

Have an awareness of how to plan and conduct a simple experiment with appropriate regard to design and analysis issues

Apply appropriate spatial analysis techniques to data and correctly interpret the outputs

Develop an understanding of the scientific method to develop ideas, make observations, and set and test hypotheses

Be able to communicate the results of environmental scientific investigations to an appropriate audience

Apply appropriate temporal analysis techniques to data and correctly interpret the outputs


The broad base of the environmetal science degree provides considerable flexibility in terms of career opportunities. You can expect to find employment in industrial organisations, advisory agencies, local government, and in research and development, either within Europe or overseas. The course also provides a good basis for teaching and work in the media. You may consider postgraduate study e.g. a professional MSc course, or research leading to a PhD.

Course programme

On this environmental science degree course you will study 120 credits in each year, through a range of lectures, tutorials, seminars and fieldwork. Our courses are modular. Some modules are compulsory, others are optional, allowing you to expand your studies into new areas or develop specialisms that interest you. Year 1 Compulsory modules on the Environmental Science degree may include: Ecosystem Services and Function Essential Chemistry* Ecology and Evolution Chemistry in Biology and the Environment Introductory Research Skills Academic Tutorials Field Course: Making Snowdonia *Those without a sufficient background in chemistry will take the Essential Chemistry module. Year 2 Compulsory modules may include: Water, Air and Soil Pollution Catchment Processes Instrumental Methods for Non Chemists Research Methods & GIS Field Course: UK The optional modules available in thesecond year build on those in the first to develop some focused specialisation within your degree. Year 3 You will complete your Honours Project; an individual research project on a topic of interest to you, possibly in conjunction with an outside organisation. Compulsory modules may include: Pollution and Environment Environmental Geochemistry Renewable Energy Environmental Issues Waste Management and Utilisation In addition to the compulsory modules, you choose from a wide range of options including a field course to Tenerife.
