EPILEPSY AWARENESS AND DIAZEPAM RECTAL TUBE ADMINISTRATION
Course Content & Certificate
The course is designed for social care staff who may be required to administer rectal diazepam.
Content:
Awareness: definition of epilepsy - prevalence - classification of seizures -
principles of managing seizures - impact of epilepsy on lifestyle - differences between status epilepticus and serial seizures.
Diazepam RTA: organisational policies - procedures for rectal tube insertion
(includes practice on a model) - potential difficulties - legal and ethical
considerations - local and national resources for the support of people with epilepsy.
Successful completion of the course gives a Training for Care Certificate of Training which meets Lothian Health's "Training Standards for the Administration of Rectal Diazepam".
Tutors and Teaching
Tutors are TfC professional associates or staff, who are qualified nurses and are experienced in working with people with epilepsy.
Teaching on the course is interactive with good opportunity to share and discuss course-related issues in the workplace. There is also a video presentation and a practical exercise, and a short assessment to confirm the knowledge acquired.
