Course Content
The course consists of common core modules with two discrete streams, one related to small business development and the other to applied aspects of horse health. The business development stream focuses on the range of skills needed to set up and run a small business successfully with some focus on issues of particular relevance to businesses located in rural settings.

The applied health stream includes the study of microbiology and parasitology, laboratory diagnostic techniques and drug management. The core modules cover a variety of topics relevant to the care and management of horses, including the scientific principles underpinning equine body system functions and the implications for correct horse and stable management. During the final year of this course, students complete a research project, examples of previous topics include:

  • Maternal behaviour in chimpanzees
  • Captive breeding programmes for big cats
  • The welfare implications of tail docking puppies
  • The welfare of farm animals at markets

Students also may have the opportunity to take part in a study tour to countries such as Ireland, providing hands on experience of the equestrian industry throughout Europe.

Assessment Methods
Students are assessed using a wide range of methods including portfolios, reports, practical assessments, essays, oral presentations and time-constrained tests. In the third year, students complete an individual research project on a topic of their choice.

Progression Opportunities
Students may continue to study towards an M.Sc. degree.
