You will have the chance to improve your English by having group discussions on thought-provoking stories you read in English. We will read stories, discuss and respond to them. You will develop your vocabulary, your understanding of meaning and implication and how to read between the lines, your ability to express yourself and respond to the opinions of others.

About this course
• use more complex vocabulary particularly descriptive language
• read more discerningly and be able to identify subtle changes in meaning
• better identify the implications of what is said and respond to meaning that isn’t stated directly
• summarise the main points of a story
• use a range of opinion-giving language
• use appropriate language to justify your views and opinions
• speak more fluently and confidently about literature.
You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a file to keep your work in.
This will be a dynamic class with lots of discussion and participation. Sunday morning will fly by! To prepare for the class, you will be given guide sheets to make understanding the story easier so you will be able to take part in the class dicussions.
Each week you will be asked to prepare for the book club discussion in two ways:
1) read the assigned story
2) prepare using the guide sheets by taking notes and underlining sections of the text accordingly
You will work as a class or in groups and discuss the guide sheets, share opinions and ask questions. While students are talking, the teacher will give you feedback on your focus as well as focus in class on issues raised.

Course programme
We will read and discuss a range of short-stories in English by different writers. The stories will be chosen based on the level and interests of the learners. You will focus on extending your vocabulary and range of expression so you can express yourself more accurately and understand small changes in meaning. You will be practise identifying the implications of what is written and responding to meaning that isn't stated directly. We will also focus on summarising the main points of a story and using a range of opinion-giving language to talk about events and their meaning within the story.
