About this course

Those who have already learnt the fundamentals of SDN/NFV and who are also particularly interested in the SD-WAN application. As such this is of strong interest to pre-sales engineers from operators and service providers who need to discuss this use case and the associated options with their customers.

Fundamental Characteristics of SD-WAN

SD-WAN Network Components (3 topics)

  • SD-WAN Edge Devices
  • SD-WAN Controller
  • Service Orchestrator

SD-WAN Service Components (3 topics)

  • Policy Manager
  • Service Portal
  • Billing

Transport-independence of Underlay Network (1 topic)

  • Using SD-WAN with different underlay technologies: Dedicated Internet Access, Broadband Internet (Cable, DSL or PON), Internet over LTE, MPLS over packet or MPLS over fiber.

IP-based Virtual Overlay Network (2 topics)

  • Using IP-based virtual overlay networks, including securing links using IPsec tunnels over Internet or
  • MPLS underlay networks.

Service Assurance of SD-WAN Connections (2 topics)

  • Using QoS performance, e.g., packet loss and packet latency, to measure SD-WAN tunnel performance.
  • Increasingly "Network Telemetry", monitoring WAN connection performance to ensure it meets the application requirements. If so, the application can be forwarded, using policy criteria: transmission over a specific WAN, only use MPLS over fibre, not public Internet.

Application-Driven Packet Forwarding (3 topics)

  • Applying application-level classification (up to OSI Layer 7) at the customer premises, for site-to-site, site-to-Cloud, connectivity.
  • Ensuring High Availability in SD-WAN Deployments (1 topic)
  • Using SD-WAN tunnels created over connections from different providers, Internet and MPLS VPNs, or MPLS VPN and LTE (Internet) enabling service provider, site location, network path, or physical path, diversity and redundancy.

Policy-based Packet Forwarding (1 topic)

  • Applying network and service policy enforcement to make application forwarding (or blocking) decisions for SD-WANs tunnels over each WAN connection. Policies can be based on each application or application grouping, e.g., real-time media or conferencing application.

WAN Optimization (1 topic)

  • Using WAN Optimization to enable data compression, data caching, forward error correction and protocol spoofing, to reduce the amount of WAN bandwidth required.

Service Automation via Centralized Management, Control and Orchestration (2 topics)

  • Investigating service automation via centralized management discussed earlier in the workshop. These control and orchestration of SD-WAN tunnels allows for automatic configuration of SD-WAN customer premises equipment.
  • We also discuss Zero-touch Orchestration, Operations and Management, known as ZOOM. Where all configuration information is managed via the centralized management system.

SD-WAN Managed Service Use Cases

SD-WAN service tunneled over Internet and MPLS WANs (1 topic)

  • A use case for an SD-WAN managed across public Internet and MPLS VPN WANs between customer sites.

SD-WAN service tunneled over Multiple ISPs (1 topic)

  • A use case for an SD-WAN service across multiple providers for WAN resiliency.

SD-WAN Service with SD-WAN Edge Devices Distributed (1 topic)

  • A use case for an SD-WAN service across multiple WANs using physical and/or VNF-based SD-WAN Edge devices.

SD-WAN Service with SD-WAN Edge Devices Centralized (Cloud-based (1 topic)

  • A use case for an SD-WAN service across multiple WANs using Cloud-based (centralized VNFs) SD-WAN Edge devices.

SD-WAN Vendor Review (4 topics)

  • Investigating various SD-WAN architectures and reviewing vendor solutions, including strengths and weaknesses. Vendors include but not limited to:
  • Viptela
  • Velocloud
  • SilverPeak
  • Riverbed
  • Versa Networks
  • Nuage Networks

Next Steps for SD-WAN (2 topics)

  • How is SD-WAN evolving?
  • What outstanding challenges exist?
