MA European Cultures

Full-Time Programme

Why study this course at Birkbeck?

  • Gain an advanced insight into European cultures, even if you do not speak other European languages.
  • Ideal if you wish to embark on doctoral research, further your career prospects, particularly in arts-related fields, or build on a personal interest.

As a whole, the programme offers an intellectually challenging, multidisciplinary approach to some of the most stimulating aspects of European cultural studies, helping you acquire the practical and intellectual skills needed for study at postgraduate level and also giving you ample opportunity to practise those skills.

What will I be studying?

A core course, Themes in Modern European Cultures, provides an overview of important themes underpinning the development and integration of European cultures, primarily in the twentieth century, and introduces a variety of approaches and methodologies relevant to their study. It encourages a pluralist, cross-disciplinary and comparative approach to various cultures, as do a number of option modules, which allow for a more detailed focus on specific European cultural topics and encourage the development of the critical tools needed to explore them.

Study Resources

Because aspects of European culture will be studied in English, you will be given access to advanced-level study of non-English-speaking cultures, even if you do not speak other European languages. Students with degree-level knowledge of French, German or Spanish will have the opportunity to take optional courses which examine cultural artefacts in the original language.
