About this course
Sociology is an exciting subject that challenges the common sense understanding of the world around us. Sociologists examine the influences that shape peoples identities and the processes that create social behaviour. You do not need to have studied sociology before, but you will need GCSE grade C in English and a B in one other humanities subject.

What kind of student is this course suitable for?
The course will appeal to you if you are interested in making sense of the rapidly changing world you live in and your situation in it. People who like to avoid shocking discoveries, who like the safety of the rules and maxims of the 'world taken for granted', who feel no temptation before closed doors, who have no curiosity about human beings should probably stay away from sociology! The content is demanding and you will need to be happy with working hard with other students, as well as being motivated to work independently.
What could I do with a qualification in this subject?
Ideal for students who would like to read Sociology at University. Sociology complements subjects such as Economics, Geography, History and Psychology. The subjects insight into social processes provide a useful contrast to Business Studies, Computing, Modern Languages and the sciences.
In terms of careers and professional opportunities - a good Sociology degree can be used for careers in, for example, the media and the civil service. Other careers include management, whether it is in the caring professions, social work, policing, medicine or in business.
