Overview
The European Studies (French pathway) BA is an interdepartmental study programme that allows you to study Modern Europe from a French perspective. You will study the politics, history, language and contemporary culture of France in-depth, preparing you for the third year where you will be taught and examined at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques (Sciences Po).

Year 1

Courses are divided into modules. Each year you will normally take modules totalling 120 credits.

  • Revolution & Reaction in Modern France: an introduction to modern French History (15 credits)
  • French Political Thought (15 credits)
Optional Modules

In addition, you are required to take 30 credits from a range of optional “Europe” modules. Modules may typically include:

  • European Law (The Dickson Poon School of Law) (15 credits)
  • Introduction to International Economics (15 credits)
  • The Causes of War (Department of War Studies) (15 credits)
  • Introduction to Politics (15 credits)


Year 2

Year 2 Required Modules

You are required to take the following modules:

  • Core French Language (15 credits)
  • The Integration of the European Union (30 credits)
  • The French Civil War, 1934-1970 (Department of History) subject to availability (30 credits) OR
  • Modern French History (15 credits) PLUS
  • French Political Thought II (15 credits)

In addition, you are required to take 30 credits from a wide range of optional “Europe” modules. Modules may typically include:

You are also required to take 15 credits from a range of optional French modules. Modules may typically include:

  • Modernity & the City (15 credits)
  • The Idea of France (15 credits)
  • Death & Desire: Love in French Literature before 1700 (15 credits)
  • The French Novel after 1700 (15 credits)
  • French Poetry after 1800 (15 credits)
  • Writing the Self in French Literature since 1700 (15 credits)


Year 3

Year 3 Required Modules

You will spend your third year of study in France at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques (Sciences Po), where you are required to take modules from the International Programme, as well as:

• Year Abroad Practical Exam Aural & Oral Comprehension (once you’ve returned to King’s College London following your study abroad year)

Optional Modules There are no optional modules in your third year.


Year 4

Year 4 Required Modules

You are required to take one of the following modules:

  • French Language (15 credits) OR
  • The Stylistics of Translation (depending on the level of French)
Optional Modules

European Studies

In addition you are required to take 60 credits worth of European Studies optional modules. Modules may typically include:

  • European Political Thought (30 credits)
  • The Political Economy of Finance and Crisis (30 credits)
  • The EU in the International System (30 credits)
  • European Political Economy (30 credits)
  • Extended Essay option if written on a European topic (Department of War Studies) (30 credits)
  • Public Policy in Europe (15 credits)

French

You are also required to take 45 credits worth of French optional modules. Modules may typically include:

  • Extended Essay option if written on a French topic (30 credits) OR
  • Dissertation (15 credits)

(Please note that it is not possible to take both Extended Essay and Dissertation options.)
