About this course

- Chart the history of experimental and postmodern music from Satie to the present day.
- You will also learn some key concepts and aesthetic ideas associated with this kind of work as well as lots of repertoire
- Feel confident undertaking further reading and listening of related works
- Be able to critically engage with music journalism in this field (e.g. concert reviews, composer biographies).

Please bring a notebook and pen.
You may wish to buy some of the music or books recommended in class.

- Satie: Vexations and Sarabandes (repetition, simplicity and stasis)
- Cage: Indeterminacy, listening
- Materiality: Steve Reich’s tape pieces, John Oswald’s Plunderphonics
- Fluxus: Instructional scores and performance art
- Cardew: The Scratch Orchestra
- Music After the Internet: Jennifer Walshe’s New Discipline, Neo Hülcker’s ASMR.

The classes will be a mixture of lecturing, listening to music and discussion. Wider reading and research will be suggested but there will not be any compulsory ‘homework’. It is hoped that you will be interested to read a little about these works between classes.
