Brunel University London's MA/MMus Experimental Music is the UK's first master's programme in Experimental Music and offers you the opportunity to develop your own programme of study, based around your particular interests in contemporary music-making.

As a postgraduate student of MA/MMus Experimental Music you will be able to take advantage of the presence of the professional musicians who form Brunel University London’s tutoring staff, ensembles-in-residence and other musicians within Music at Brunel’s postgraduate community in your practice-based work.

Course programme

Course Content

Typical modules available on MA/MMus Experimental Music are:

Locating Practice (30 credits)
An investigation of the theoretical and technical bases, and the contemporary context, of your individual practice as a composer, improviser, musicologist, performer or sonic artist.

Experimental Music Techniques (30 credits)
You will study techniques in composition, improvisation, musicology, performance or sonic arts within your own creative and/or critical practice.

Experimental Music Portfolio (30 credits)
A series of student-directed short projects, developing creative and/or critical ideas which will form the basis for your master's Major Project.

Major Project (90 credits)
A practical project will lead to you being awarded the degree of MMusa dissertation to the award of MA.

Dissertation (90 credits)
