This is a ten week course aimed at exploring and combining a range of traditional and experimental woodcut and linocut printing techniques and materials to create rich layered prints.
You will be guided through these traditional relief techniques and then encouraged to experiment and combine methods, materials and layered imagery to create a final print.

About this course
• Use cutting tools safely and confidently to create a variety of marks on wood and lino
• Practice caustic lino etching safely and effectively
• Print a wood and lino block by hand and using the printing press
• Use stencils, monotype and inking techniques in combination with wood and linocut blocks
• Make and use a registration template for multiple block printing
• Use the print studio independently and safely.
All basic materials will be provided. It would be useful to bring along sketches or a sketchbook or photographic material you may wish to work with.
Donations of lint free rags for cleaning and newspapers are always welcome.
Talks, demonstrations, group discussion, practical work and individual tutoring will all take place in the class.
Information for further reading and resources will be given should learners wish to continue research outside the class.

Course programme
Traditional and contemporary experimental approaches to relief printing including:
• Woodcut Printing- Tools, materials, inks, papers, hand printing and using the printing press
• Linocut Printing- Tools, materials, cutting and etching plates, hand printing and using the printing press
• Using stencils, jigsaw cutting, mono-type and other surfaces to create interesting ink layers.
• Inking using single colours, multiple colour printing and blend rolls.
• Combining techniques and materials to make multiple layered prints.
• Using a registration sheet to correctly line up multiple block prints.
