Discover the habitat and wildlife of London’s wetlands in early spring during this relaxed course led by zoologist Brenna Boyle. Introductory session at Cit Lit followed by two fieldtrips to RSPB Rainham Marshes (Thurrock) and the London Wetland Centre (Barnes).Brenna Boyle (B.Sc Hons Dunelm, M.Sc DIC) is a zoologist, wildlife guide and environmental teacher. She runs Wild Capital; London's wildlife discovery service and also works for two urban environmental education charities.

About this course
• Define what constitutes a wetland• Outline why wetlands are important habitats• Identify a variety of wetland bird species by sight• Recognise the calls or songs of a selection of wetland birds• Interpret bird behaviour which you observe• Explore London’s fantastic wetland sites with increased awareness and enjoyment, noticing and being able to describe the wildlife they sustain• Understand the ways in which you can become involved with London’s wildlife and wetland habitats should you wish.
You will need to cover the cost of your transport to the meeting places and the cost of entry to both sites (total £17 full price, concessions available). If you are a member of the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust entry to the London Wetland Centre is free. Entry to Rainham Marshes is free for the RSPB members. Please wear appropriate outdoor clothing, including sturdy footwear and warm or waterproof layers as required to be outdoors for 3 hours.

The first session will be an introduction at City Lit and will include a presentation as well as individual and group learning activities. The following two sessions will take place at the London Wetlands Centre, Barnes and Rainham Marshes and will involve a guided walk to see, identify and discuss wetland wildlife. . Both field trip sites are accessible by public transport with some walking required. Exact meeting points will be discussed in the first session.
