The two-year Extended Diploma offers a single route in design for performance and a wider range of productions and events. Although it will foster an understanding of various performance genres there isn’t a performance requirement within the course.

It is a mainly technical and practical course providing essential underpinning contextual knowledge for those aged 16 and over covering design for events such as theatre, dance, music, film, TV, museum and wide variety of street and community activity.

About this course

You’ll explore the design process both digitally and practically to support and enhance your personal growth and help you develop your study and vocational skills.

During your studies you’ll discover fresh approaches to production where you’ll work in groups and with professionally trained academics and technicians to learn new techniques and captivate audiences. You’ll have full access to our industry-standard facilities at our university campus and gain valuable feedback from tutorials and through group discussions.

By taking this course, you’ll be able to choose a creative direction where you can progress to a degree within UCA, at another university or pursue any future career in production or stage, music, film or entertainment industries.

During your first year, you’ll experience a range of activities that interests you where you’ll have the freedom to explore your own direction.

Course stages
  • Principles of production and design

    You’ll learn the practical and theoretical principles of production and design which may be for stage, drama, dance, music, film TV and other events as well as how to engage with audiences.

  • Historical and contemporary context

    You’ll study health and safety in production, be introduced to the responsibilities of a designer, gain critical awareness in an historical and contemporary context as well as learning how to analyse and evaluate performance and production needs.

  • Digital skills

    You’ll develop a range practical and digital skills through group production projects providing you with further insight to your own interests and strengths.

At the end of the second year, you’ll create an exciting final project to show what you’ve accomplished.

Course stages
  • Production activities

    You’ll begin to apply your knowledge of structure, space, lighting, sound, projection, audience etc and participate in a range of individual and collaborative production activities.

  • Personal skills and placement

    You’ll progressively focus on your personal goals and present what you’ve learned with increasing confidence. Most students will undertake a placement.

  • Preparation for future

    You’ll develop greater individual direction evaluating your skills, understanding and ambitions in preparing for further studies or choosing a career path. This will form part of your Final Major Project.

  • Final major project

    Towards the end of the second year, you’ll work on your own extended project applying the skills and knowledge you have learned to demonstrate your abilities as part of a final assessment.
