This course is ideal for people wishing to follow a career in the public services (or progress to Higher Education in the subject) You can follow two pathways: uniformed and non-uniformed, allowing you to focus on either the emergency services, armed forces or civil service The course is a mixture of academic and physical lessons that will give you an insight into what's required to work in the public services You will meet public services professionals, visit barracks, prisons, law courts, and go to a residential activity centre where to do various outdoor adventure activities

You'll learn about: teamwork & leadership; discipline; physical preparation for the services; fitness testing & training; command & control; responding to emergency service incidents; crime and its effects; understanding the impact of war; conflict & terrorism on the public services; and human behaviour Those following the non-uniformed pathway will also study public service data interpretation and enhancing public service delivery through the use of ICT The course looks at planning and taking part in outdoor activities such as hill walking, climbing, canoeing and surfing
How will I be assessed?Through a combination of practical work and a portfolio of assignments, case studies and tests Some units may contain externally set exams
What may it lead to?You can move into a career across a range of public services including the armed forces, fire service, prison service, ambulance service, paramedics, police and customs and excise, you you could go onto a range of HND or degree courses
Entry RequirementsYou should have 5 GCSEs at grade C (including English and Maths) All students must be able to demonstrate a strong interest in Public Services An interview and practical assessment will be completed prior to offering a place on the course as well as obtaining good references If you are progressing from the Level 2 Public Services course, you must have successfully completed the qualification achieving a merit grade (including English and Maths) and have a good report from your previous tutors
Additional Information & Other CostsAlthough there is a strong practical element within this course, much of the work is carried out in the classroom There may be trips and activities to a range of different places related to the course content Students will be expected to purchase a uniform or kit that relates to this course Further details will be explained at the interview stage All students are required to undertake a minimum of two weeks of work experience in a public services-related environment
