Course programme

Who is this course for?

All learners must be on the A2 year of their A' Level course. This will be an additional qualification to their programme.

What qualifications or experience do I need ?

A range of between five and six GCSEs with B grades in appropriate subjects. All learners must be on the A2 year of their A' Level course. All learners must have a grade B in English Language and be committed to the course. All learners will need a recommendation from either their personal tutor or a member of teaching staff.

What will I study ?

The Extended Project can be in the form of either: " a dissertation, " an investigation/field study with statistical analysis, " a performance " an artefact. " Each Extended Project will be an individual piece and the choice of subject will be decided by the learner in consultation with their tutor. The EP has been devised to develop a range of skills such as independent learning skills, investigation/research skills, how to be a critical thinker, oral and written communication skills. It has also been developed as a response to Universities and employers concerns that young people do not have these skills. Interestingly students gain most marks on the processes involved in the EP rather than the outcome (the completed project itself). The topic/research question that you select can either complement current studies or be based on future interests, perhaps career aspirations such as medicine.

How will I be assessed ?

The Extended Project can be in the form of either a dissertation, an investigation/field study with statistical analysis, a performance or an artefact. You will have to track your progress with an activity log and also give an oral presentation at the end about your EP discussing the research process and your experiences. All these will be assessed by your tutor.

What qualifications could I achieve ?

An AS Level qualification. The only AS Level qualification in which you can be awarded an A*

How do I join the course ?

You must complete a full-time application form and make an appointment for an interview with a tutor. References will be required from your previous educational establishment.

Will I need an interview ?

Yes - only available for learners on the second year of their A' Level course (A2 year) or A2 direct entry learners.

Any extra costs for equipment/materials ?

Will depend on the type of Extended Project selected by the learner.
