What’s Covered

Day 1 – (approximately 80% theory and 20% practical)

  • Introduction and administration
  • Law & legislation (Montreal Protocol, Kyoto Protocol, British Standards etc.)
  • Ozone & global warming
  • Health & Safety
  • COSHH
  • The 4 functions of an A/C System
  • Theory of heat transfer
  • A/C terminology
  • Pressure/Temperature relationship
  • Identification of refrigerants
  • A/C system components and system configuration
  • System operation (refrigeration cycle - heating & cooling)

Day 2 – (approximately 20% theory and 80% practical) - Following on from day 1 with a continuation of practical tasks associated with installing a ‘Split System’

  • Making joints (pipe flaring, swaging, brazing and compression fit joints)
  • Refrigerant recovery
  • Pressure Testing (Strength & Leak testing to BS EN 378 Standards)
  • System evacuation
  • Re-charging system with refrigerant
  • Leak detection (Oxygen Free Nitrogen, Lock Trace, Bubble Solutions, Electronic Leak Detectors)

Day 3 – (approximately 20% theory and 80% practical)

  • Electrical theory and basic installation checks
  • Commissioning checks & customer reports
  • Pipe & insulation selection and fitting
  • Trunking and wall brackets
  • Condensate drainage and condensate pumps

Day 4 – (approximately 50% theory and 50% practical)

  • practical assesment
  • Questions & answer session
  • Additional practical (as reqested by students)

Day 5 – (approximately 50% theory and 50% practical)

  • written assessments
  • practical update
  • Additional theory (as reqested by students)
