About this course

Standard entry to this course requires a minimum of 32 UCAS points from a recognised level 3 qualification in a related subject. You are expected to hold GCSE English at grade 4/C or equivalent. We welcome applicants who do not match standard entry requirements but who can demonstrate ability to study this subject at university level and who can evidence relevant experience.

Course programme

Year 1

All modules are compulsory on this programme. In year one, you will complete four modules covering academic practice alongside practical and creative subjects. Additionally, you will study fashion and costume industries; design and visual communication; prototype production; and contextual study, which is explored through a series of lectures and seminars. In addition guest speakers support the fashion and costume industries module. Design projects are industry linked and specialist staff deliver production modules in our well-resourced workshop and studios.

Year 2

In year two a greater degree of independent study is required with further development of your specialist skills culminating in a final collection and exhibition. To ensure currency with industry you will be required to complete an independently-sourced work placement of approximately 72 hours. The location of work placements are negotiable. Previous students have gained work placements in Leicestershire.

Additional information

Assessment is continuous throughout both years for each module. All assessment is summative and contributes to progression and achievement. Design assignments are coursework based, through sketchbooks, presentations, final garment production with accompanied evaluative evidence. Extended writing skills are assessed in contextual studies in addition to the creation of a personal fashion blog. An assessment submission schedule is issued when the course commences. You can expect summative assessment feedback within 20 working days. Upon successful completion of the FdA, you will be awarded either pass, merit or distinction. Accreditation of Prior Learning is considered for this programme.
