Fashion and Textiles AS and A2
INTRODUCTION
This highly creative course aims to give you the confidence and skills to explore a diverse range of themes, and to develop a questioning and analytical attitude. There is a strong emphasis on the teaching of drawing through the use of a sewing machine as well as developing underpinning research skills. You are encouraged to explore and experiment through a wide range of textiles / fashion media.
It should be noted that this is an Art based qualification. It is important that students are willing to draw / create visual ideas as well as use the sewing machine.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
As part of an advanced level programme, a minimum of 4 G.C.S.E.s at grade C or above (or the equivalent) and a minimum of Maths or English at grade D.
Grade C in English and/or Maths are desirable but not essential.
Grade C or above in Art or Textiles G.C.S.E. (or equivalent is essential.
LENGTH OF COURSE
AS level is one year, followed by a second year for those progressing to A2 level
AS CONTENT
1 portfolio of practical coursework.
1 externally set practical project.
AS ASSESSMENT
1 portfolio of practical coursework â€" worth 60% of the total AS marks
1 externally set practical project â€" worth 40% of the total AS marks
2 CONTENT
AS content will be extended further plus students will be expected to produce a written study of a relevant artist/craftsperson/designer or movement
· 1 portfolio of practical coursework (including a written personal study).
· 1 externally set practical project.
A2 ASSESSMENT
1 portfolio of practical coursework (including a written personal study) worth 60% of the marks.
1 externally set practical project worth 40% of the marks.
· 1 portfolio of practical coursework (1 including a written personal study)
· 1 externally set practical project
ALL AS AND A LEVEL WORK WILL INCLUDE:
· Drawing and painting for Textiles/Fashion
· Fashion Illustration
· Study of the work of historical & contemporary Fashion & Textile Designers.
· Research of Fashion Trends
· Introduction and development of techniques in Textiles & Fashion such as machine embroidery, garment construction techniques
· Research and development of ideas through a sustained use of sketchbooks.
· Final outcomes will be individually designed & created textile techniques onto a garment.

The college provides well-equipped and modern studios that enable students to enjoy an exciting and supportive atmosphere that values hard work. Creativity, imagination, expression and independence are developed from this solid course structure. Students must display a genuine interest in, and a high level of commitment to Textiles/Fashion. All students will need to use the following on a regular basis:
Sewing machine for textile & fashion techniques
Computer - for research & generation of ideas
Personal sketchbook - for illustration & development of ideas

The Arts Division at Gateway has an excellent reputation for their courses. Many students
progress onto the Foundation Diploma in Art &Design through to HND and BA (Hons) degree courses.
The Foundation Diploma at Gateway is an exciting and successful course and welcomes students who have shown commitment through their A level studies.
Also this course will be valuable for students wishing to pursue a career related to Fashion e.g. Fashion Marketing/Buying etc.
For students wishing to study Fashion or Contour Design, it is recommended that this course is studied alongside Art & Graphics or BTEC National Certificate in Art & Design
