Content
Much more than simply a course in fashion drawing, this course offers you the chance to learn the widest range of illustration, graphic and visual communication skills. The course is underpinned by a strong drawing and conceptual emphasis and is enhanced by contemporary techniques in photography, new media and the moving image. The small group of students taken on each year creates a personalised course experience.
Structure
Projects on the course will help you develop your creative skills and stretch your imagination - how to look, record, develop, and make images. The overall theme is a structured approach to understanding the creative process and what this means to the illustrator, from concept to realisation. Cultural and Historical Studies will contextualise illustration within the visual arts, current practice and product. We positively encourage you to work with students on other fashion pathways on collaborative projects.
During your studies, you will have the opportunity to focus on the reality of the fashion business whilst building your confidence as an illustrator, broadening your knowledge through a programme of fashion-based cultural and historical study units and preparing you for industry with portfolio preparation and marketing skills. You will be introduced to fast paced live briefs and competitions for high profile fashion clients. You will experience first hand the reality of professional practice and current trends through an industry placement with a chosen illustrator, designer, publication or brand.
You will also work as an individual to develop your personal concepts and style, allowing you to focus your work towards your chosen career path as a freelance illustrator, graphic designer or professional across a wide range of fashion, design, styling, advertising, new media, art and creative industries. You will have an exciting opportunity to showcase your work to industry professionals. The course is enhanced by an ongoing and lively programme of fashion industry events and lectures, as well as access to events throughout University of the Arts London.
