This course is about developing your fashion construction skills to achieve a professional finish. You will learn how to sew a professionally finished skirt, beginning with learning some essential sewing techniques. You will then progress on to making a skirt from a commercial pattern that you will bring to class after advice from your tutor. This course will give you the skills and techniques needed to sew a skirt of your choice and begin building a wardrobe of fashionable and professionally finished garments with confidence. It is essential that you read the full course outline before enrolling on this course.

Course programme
• Sew facings and waistbands
• Understitching
• Sew invisible, lapped or standard zips
• Sew a skirt from a commercial pattern of your choice
• Cutting techniques, lay plans and understanding commercial patterns.
• The course will be hands on with learning achieved through repetition and practicing skirt making techniques.
• You will be taught by demonstration, group and individual tuition. You will be taken through the techniques with a group demonstration and then individually as necessary.
• Each separate technique will be practiced and then a sample made for reference in a file.
• You may need to complete cutting out tasks in your own time.
• You are encouraged to begin a skirt making folder in which to keep samples, hand-outs and any note taking you will find useful and will be able to refer to outside of class.
• To get the most out of this course you will need to attend every session.
• There will be recommendations for relevant books and shops and learning materials which will help develop your skills outside of class. Advice will be given on courses and classes to develop skills learnt.
Additional information
You can continue to develop your skills by studying VX350 Fashion: professional garment construction next term, where you will complete a trouser, or VX347 Fashion: advanced sewing skills or VX342 Sewing on Sundays: advanced. You could also complete a related fashion or textiles course, such as hand sewing, embroidery and embellishment or leather accessories.
