This foundation degree is intended to prepare you for a career in animation. You will gain a comprehensive grounding in drawing, 2D and 3D animation, modelling, texturing, lighting, rendering and other essential skills. You will also become familiar with animation theory and have the opportunity to become familiar with the operation of an animation studio workflow.

About this course

4 GCSEs (A-C) or equivalent (preferably including English, Media/Technology), and at least one of the following or equivalent UK or international qualification: 1 A Level (A-C); 2 AS Levels (A-C); Level 3 Foundation Diploma or National Diploma; Progression Diploma (A-C) or International Baccalaureate (24 points or above). Also, an interview and a portfolio, showreel or other indicator of creative or technical practice where appropriate.

Course programme

With optional One Year Top-Up to BA (Hons) Animation Production

There is an enormous demand – both commercially and experimentally – for animated work across all media including film, television, internet, games and advertising.

You will explore the medium using state-of-the-art software and produce a portfolio of creative and professional work. As a vocational course, you will work whenever possible on live projects and placements.

The course is run by a professional team with direct involvement from industry partners. It offers great opportunities to work in an inspiring and realistic environment that is supported by academic study.

FdA Animation Practice at Ravensbourne is only one of a handful of animation courses to be recognised and accredited by Skillset as providing exceptional standards of training that are in line with industry.

Level 1

Delivers the fundamental skills and knowledge to understand both traditional 2D, and 3D computer generated techniques in animation. Topics include: animation principles/visual studies; animation and sound; storyboard and layout; bipedal animation/visual studies; character animation/visual studies.

Level 2

Identifies areas in which you wish to specialise as a career, allowing you time to explore those in greater depth. Topics include: digital environments/visual studies; industry exercises; postproduction and visual effects.

Assessment

You will be continually assessed through the presentation of project and written work.

Learning and Support

You will study through a mix of practice and theory-based learning. This will include lectures, seminars, workshops, individual tutorials, self-directed study and projects. You will be supported by well-qualified teaching staff, sessional staff and visiting professionals who will bring an industry perspective to the course.

Progression

Successful completion of this course can lead to study of the BA (Hons) Animation Production.

Payment of Fees

Students may pay fees either directly to the college or by applying for a tuition fee loan.

Where students are paying fees directly to the college, tuition fees are due in full at the start of the academic year or by the dates stated above if a discount is being claimed.

Where agreement exists to pay by instalments, fees are payable as follows:-

  • 40% of the tuition fee + registration fees (if applicable) + administration charge on enrolment.
  • 30% of tuition fee at the start of the second term.
  • 30% of the tuition at the start of the third term.

Should a student withdraw from a course during the year, tuition fees will be charged as follows:-

  • Withdrawal during the first two weeks nil
  • Withdrawal before 1st January First terms fees payable
  • Withdrawal on or after 1st January Full years fees payable
  • Where Registration fees are charged these are payable on enrolment at the start of the academic year and are not refundable.

Island Students (Channel Islands & Isle of Man): £TBC Arrangements can be made with the finance office to pay tuition fees in three termly instalments. There is an administration charge of 1% of the full year's tuition fee (minimum £20) for making this arrangement Tuition fees are subject to increase for subsequent years of the course.
