Course programme

Overview

The role of teaching assistant is expanding and there are excellent opportunities for trained staff. Learning on the course will be a combination of college sessions, workplace practice and independent study.

At level 4, topics you will study relate to children’s development and learning, principles of play and learning, safeguarding, the rights of the child and collaborative working with teachers.

At level 5, you will focus on supporting learning in key curriculum subjects, including maths, English, science and ICT. You will also explore issues relating to current educational and legislative practice and be involved in independent research. There will also be a focus on supporting children with special educational needs.


Entry Requirements

  • Significant experience of working with children in a primary or secondary school setting as a volunteer or through paid employment.
  • You will need to undertake 18 hours per week in a relevant placement if not currently employed in an early years setting.
  • You must have the equivalent to level 3 CACHE, BTEC or NVQ in a related subject and a least two GCSEs, including grade C in English language and maths or equivalent level 2 qualification.
  • You will complete English and maths assessments as part of the interview process.
