Course programme

Subjects covered Level 4 (Year 1 F/T) • Anatomy • Gym Instruction [REPS] • Physiology • Lifestyle and Health • Weight Management and Dietetics I • Weight Management and Dietetics II • Degree Study Skills • Research Methods in Sport and Exercise Sciences Level 4 modules are designed to introduce a broad range of areas of knowledge, and are highly applied in order to develop practical and personal skills. Thus, Anatomy & Physiology and Dietetics provide the scientific foundation to the course, whilst practical operational skills are introduced through modules including Gym Instruction and Lifestyle and Health. On completion of Level 4 students are qualified Fitness Instructors (Gym) and are eligible for entry to the Register of Fitness Professionals (REPS) at Level 2. This is the nationally recognised requirement for employment in a gym setting. Level 5 (Year 2 F/T) • Personal Training and Group Exercise [REPS] • Career Mapping and Project Planning • Fitness Analysis for Personal Trainers • Managing Your Personal Training Business • Advanced Training Strategies • Client Psychology and Behaviour Change • Industrial Placement • Training Needs of Specific Groups [REPS] During Level 5, students complete a hour industrial placement in a workplace chosen by them and build on the skills gained at Level 4. The method of industrial placement completion is very flexible and can be carried out as a 6 week block in the summer break between Level 4 and Level 5 or spread the hours over the second year. Theory is applied practically in case study situations such as in the module Personal Training and Group Exercise and in Advanced Training. The psychological and behavioural aspects of working with clients are also addressed along with some aspects of managing your business. On completion of Level 5 students are eligible for entry to the Register of Fitness Professionals (REPS) at Level 3 and are qualified to work as Personal Trainers, in Exercise Referral Schemes and with Older Adult populations. On completion Upon successful completion of the Foundation degree (normally above Merit level) students have the opportunity to transfer to Level 6 of the BSc (Hons) Sport Science (Human Performance) and thus achieve both qualifications.
