FE Direct is a full time, one year Initial Teacher Education (ITE) Programme that has been developed to recruit and train graduates as specialist teachers for post-16 providers in order to address the national skills shortage.
The UK still has large numbers of young people leaving school and in the population generally who do not have the equivalent of a Level 2 qualification in English. As a result, there is a growing need for English classes for people of all ages. The year-long Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training, including specialist pathway in teaching English, is aimed at graduates with relevant degrees who wish to teach English Literacy and ESOL in the post-16 sector, but are not currently in employment in Education. As part of the course, trainees will undertake a placement of a minimum of 170 hours at Leeds City College or one of our partner organisations.

Literacy and ESOL Teaching and Learning This full-time Level 5 course gives you access to professional development opportunities across FE organisations that have a shortage of English teachers. The focus on learning through immersion and experience will provide you with a greater exposure to the nature of FE learners and FE study programmes (e.g. Modern Apprenticeships). At the end of the course, you will have 135 credits that you need to teach in the Education and Training Sector. The programme will use a blended approach to teaching and learning. Teaching and learning methods used within the programme will include 24 day schools a year. These will take place on Fridays between 9.30am and 4.00pm. You will be required to complete on-line activities before and after day schools. You will also use social networking tools to discuss and share ideas with your peer group. You will work alongside teachers and spend at least 2 days per week on placement in an FE environment, learning about the types and characteristics of post-16 provision beyond GCSE and A Level, including functional Skills and Work Based Learning (WBL). You will be expected to have a 2:2 honours degree in English, or a degree with a significant subject-specialist English component. We will however consider applicants with lower degree classifications under special circumstances, so we would encourage you to contact us if you are interested in the programme to discuss your particular circumstances. Although full time HE fees of £6,750 apply to this course, it benefits from having some very attractive funding attached, as the government is seeking to attract high quality graduates to teach Maths and English.
