If you have learnt the basics of making felt or you are an experienced felt maker wanting to broaden your knowledge of the subject then this is the course for you. Learn about the traditions and contemporary uses of felt and generate new ideas and techniques for personal projects.

About this course

- Talk about traditional and contemporary uses of felt
- Make 3D hollow felt and mould around a form
- Have an understanding of the felting properties of various different wools
- Have the skills and confidence to develop personal projects and produce an individual body of work.

Basic materials will be provided but if you are working on a large-scale project you will be asked to purchase wool fibres. You may bring your own materials if you wish.

The course will be hands on with demonstrations by the tutor, handouts, individual tuition and informal group discussions. The use of a sketchbook to record your thoughts and develop your work will be encouraged and basic research methods discussed. There will be recommendations for books and information on current exhibitions that you can visit in your own time. You will learn how to use tools, equipment, and materials safely in the workshop.

Course programme

There will be a presentation of traditional and contemporary felts from around the world to deepen your knowledge of the subject, its properties and applications.

There will be demonstrations of a number of processes including precision layering and moulding 3D hollow forms that can be used to make a wide variety of items from sculptural pieces to functional bags or slippers and hats. You will have the opportunity to felt with different wools, experimenting with a variety of British fleeces.

You will be encouraged to build upon your existing skills, which will vary from person to person. There will be a chance in the first session to discuss an individual plan of learning to suit you. You will be able to develop your own project through research exercises and will be encouraged to keep a sketchbook to help develop ideas and record your interests.

Additional information

This course acts as a solid base for any other embroidery course, should you wish to get involved in a longer period of study. Your tutor will assist you in selecting the best way to progress.
