About this course
The Economics MA and BSc courses focus specifically on the macroeconomic challenges of national, regional and global economies together with the microeconomic behaviour of people and businesses. An economics degree is an excellent foundation for your career as an economist but also offers scope to pursue a diverse range of high-earning opportunities.
The Financial Economics courses combine core economic skills with current and fast-changing theories around financial markets. They give you the knowledge and techniques you need for more specialized quantitatively orientated careers in financial economics, research and forecasting or a future in business management, finance, banking and accountancy.
Some of our graduates are working as professional economists; others with the UK Government Economic Service or Scottish Government. Others are in finance or general management, working for banking multinationals, major consultancies and marketing agencies.
At Dundee you’ll be networking with other students from around the world – opening up global possibilities – and be invited to sessions where you can talk to employers about career opportunities.
Evidence reported in a recent study published by the Institute of Fiscal Studies, shows that economists are amongst the highest paid of all professional groups.
You’ll be able to make use of the University's dedicated careers service to help you to take your next step after graduating.

Course programme
Level 1 Key modules provide a basic grounding in economics, introducing basic theory and providing you with an insight into current economic ideas and issues. As part of a broad-based MA or BSc programme, two modules will be devoted to economics and a further four selected from a range of options.
Level 2 At this level, the ideas developed in first year are expanded and more advanced ideas are introduced. In microeconomics you will explore consumer choice and the theory of the firm, while in macroeconomics you will look at the aggregate economy, focusing on models of unemployment, interest rates and money markets. Again there will be the opportunity to select four further modules from a range of options including an economics module on the economics of inequality.
Level 3 The economics curriculum focuses on the core modules in microeconomics and macroeconomics that teach the fundamental tools of economic analysis. If you specialise in economics you will study the methods of empirical analysis in the econometrics module. If you study financial economics you will also look at financial institutions. If you are part of the business economics with marketing stream, you will study the foundations of marketing.
Level 4 At Level 4, the three economics degrees focus on the specialist core subjects in their particular pathways. The economics modules focus on economic theory and policy, the financial economics modules focus on financial markets and international finance while the business economics with marketing modules focus on business strategy and marketing research. Each degree pathway also allows you to take two options from a wide range available.
ModulesIn years 1 and 2 these are the same:
Level 1Semester 1
Global Economic Perspectives (BU11004)
What caused the great recession of 2007 and what can be done to prevent another one? How can we persuade people to invest in a pension plan or to donate organs? Should we always believe what is written in the newspapers? How can we strike the best deal in negotiations? In this module we show how current economic thinking can provide answers to contemporary economic questions. No previous knowledge of economic analysis is assumed.
Semester 2Foundations of Economic Analysis (BU12004)
This module develops the tools for analysing modern economies. It demonstrates how these tools can be used to analyse the behaviour of firms and households in the market place The module also looks at issues such as unemployment, interest rates, exchange rates and inflation, placing them within a general model of the economy. The scope for government intervention is discussed and the implications of the analysis are applied to recent economic developments.
plus 4 other MA modules
Level 2Semester 1
Microeconomics (BU21004)
This module focuses initially on the basic theories of consumer and firm behaviour that underpin the analysis of market demand and supply. It also looks more closely at how different market structures affect the way in which markets work in practice. It highlights the conditions under which markets will and won’t produce desirable outcomes, and the role of government in improving the operation of markets.
Recommended module:
Economics of an Unequal World (BU21006)
This module is designed for students who wish to study the nature and extent of inequality, both locally and globally. In particular, the module will examine the impact of globalisation on poverty and inequality and will use basic statistical analysis of data to highlight theoretical ideas about the causes and measurement of these issues. There will also be a focus on economic theories of justice and the impact of inequality in the UK.
Semester 2Macroeconomics and Applied Policy (BU22005)
This module provides an overview of the functioning of the macro-economy in a global context and an understanding of the key policy issues facing the UK in particular. It goes on to consider how and why money markets are important. The module examines the nature and limitations of some of the key economic performance indicators.
