Course programme

Course structure

Full-time, home-based and overseas students are provided with a studio space and attend all seminars. Part-time students work from their own studios outside the university, and use faculty facilities for practical and presentation purposes. This allows them to organise work patterns between their studios and the university at times best suited to themselves. The mandatory weekly seminars are set at a time when all students and staff are able to attend. Year 1 part-time students attend on Tuesday and Year 2 part-time students on Wednesday. Full-time students attend the seminars on both days.

Areas of study

Year 1 concentrates on the identification and development of each person's individual course of study. A degree of re-evaluation of existing practice is expected. Students engage in a dialogue with their peer group concerning their work and sound professional practice, and present a seminar. In the latter half of the year an extended essay is developed, the first draft of which is completed during the summer vacation. A work-in-progress exhibition is assessed for progression to Year 2.

In Year 2
, tutorial guidance is given on the draft of the extended essay for completion by the end of November. Students present seminars developed from the essay, and an exhibition.

Career and progression opportunities

Recent graduates have established themselves as practising artists, exhibiting in the UK and abroad. Others are employed in publishing, education, and exhibition and museum management. The course covers the full range of contemporary fine art practices, including new forms as well as traditional media.
