Course programme

About the course

The course combines the development of a solid foundation in the traditional media of painting, drawing and sculpture with the exploration and development of a wide range of other artistic media for example photography, ceramics, installations and public art.

There is a practical basis to your studies that will support your personal and professional development as a working artist. The school has strong links to arts organisations in the area giving you the opportunity to work on external arts projects.

There are excellent new studio facilities that include individual work stations and access to multimedia facilities.

The teaching programme is delivered by a small team of teaching staff who are established practitioners in their specialist field. They are supported by staff from other specialist areas with the school of Arts, Media and Education as well as a number of technicians who manage the facilities of the school.

There may be opportunities for students to spend some time studying in Greece through the university’s ongoing collaboration with the Vorgias School of Fine Arts in Athens.

What you will learn

You will develop the technical skills and knowledge to practice as a fine artist in your chosen media.

You will extend your thinking and critical understanding of the fine arts and establish an informed insight into the creative process. Your final exhibition will take place at the end of your third year and will be backed up with a detailed journal that establishes your ideas firmly in sound research and critical appraisal.

The course is modelled on the practice pursued by professional artists today ensuring you learn the practicalities of the business and marketing side of the arts world through managing your own workload, working with fellow students on exhibitions and your final year show, negotiating with commissioners, and promoting and selling your work.

You will become increasingly independent in your thinking and confident in your ability to apply your knowledge to your practical work.
