In this one-day course we explore the representation of body and body-related practices, and the surrounding concepts. Our initial focus will be on selected works by avant-garde artists from movements such as Futurism, Constructivism, Dadaism, Surrealism, moving to body and performance art of the 1960s and 1970s, and the video art. We will study works in diverse media from painting, sculpture and photography to video and installation finishing by most recent artists working with new media. Some of the artists we discuss include Umberto Boccioni, Liubov Popova, Claude Cahun, Joseph Beuys, Carolee Schneemann, Ana Mendieta, Mona Hatoum, Pipilotti Rist and Matthew Barney. We will cover the political and conceptual significance of the body imagery, and its role in constructing identities and questioning the bodily limits.

About this course
• Describe at least three works by avant-garde artists, performance artists and/or most recent artists that focuses on the body.
• Discuss at least two examples of the political relevance of artworks dealing with the representation of the body or body-related practices.
• Demonstrate improved visual analysis skills by situating works of art in the broader cultural context.
You might wish to bring a notebook.
