Botticelli created some of the most enduring mythological paintings of the Florentine Renaissance including ‘The Birth of Venus’ and ‘La Primavera’, but he was also known for his religious works. Trace his painting career and techniques; and discover the impact of the society in which he lived – the humanist Florence of first the Medici, then the religious fervour of the Dominican monk Savonarola.
Includes gallery visit.

About this course

- Describe the socio-political and art historical context of the early Florentine Renaissance
- Be able to talk with greater confidence about Botticelli’s works and practice
- Recognise key works by Botticelli and be able to decode them.

Course programme

- The context of Botticelli’s Florence – society and politics, patrons etc.
- Botticelli’s influences, processes, techniques, development
- Close readings of several key works including 'La Primavera', 'The Birth of Venus', and religious paintings.

You will be taught with slide presentation, group and individual discussion, and a guided gallery visit. Please note we are unable to guarantee stools in the galleries that we will visit so you may have to stand and to walk between artworks.
