We will explore: Caravaggio's life; his rivalries with painters like the Carraccis and his legacy through his followers (e.g. Artemesia Gentileschi, the Dutch Caravaggisti) in the socio-cultural context of the Counter-Reformation. We will also aim to look at every (known) painting he made chronologically!

- Describe key points in Caravaggio’s life
- Describe key aspects of the Counter-Reformation and how it impacted on art
- Identify the works of Caravaggio’s rivals and recognise his influence on his followers
- Recognise key Caravaggio works and be able to participate in discussions about them.

- Caravaggio’s entire (known) output with close analysis of key works.

You will be taught with short lectures, slide shows, discussions, and a guided gallery visit. You may wish to buy some of the books on any reading list given out in class. Please note we are unable to guarantee seats on gallery visits so you may have to stand and to walk between exhibits. You might prefer to invest in a lightweight portable seat.
