David Hockney sold his first painting for £10 – one of his recent works sold for $ 8 million.
This one-day course provides an overview of Hockney’s long and successful career. We will study his artistic development from the art student at the R.A. who refused to write a dissertation, through his contribution to the Pop Art Movement, portraiture, photography, landscape and more recently, iPad painting.
For Hockney, drawing is the key to all art; “Teaching people to draw is teaching people to look”. We will explore key influences and find out why he was an enormous admirer of Picasso and Matisse. As a writer, Hockney has questioned how artists of the Renaissance worked. He has presented a fascinating but controversial theory about their use of mirrors and lenses to develop perspective and chiaroscuro, challenging our view of how these two foundations of Western art were established.
