For this one-day course we will explore the mind of Leonardo da Vinci through his words and art. Beyond his accomplished paintings, Leonardo was a polymath who wrote treaties on art and nature. Driven by an insatiable curiosity he filled sketchbook after sketchbook with his observations and hypotheses about the natural world. He was also a calculating businessman who moved from client to client to accommodate his desire for fame and recognition. In addition to some of his major paintings, this course will look at Leonardo’s drawings, his theories and his relationships with the patrons who he targeted in the development of his career.
