The course is suited to people wanting to learn more about food and drink photography, whether you're a food fan, a budding photographer wanting to learn more skills, or a blogger seeking better photographs for their reviews. You will learn to identify and understand the use of a wide range of equipment and techniques in the commercial food photography industry, guided by experts within the field. Using our fully-equipped photographic studios you will work through a series of practical exercises to explore photographic equipment, technique, composition, lighting and use of props. Please note some basic photographic knowledge is required.

About this course

- illustrate how to use the camera controls and lenses to enhance your photography
- explore different techniques to photograph hot and cold food and drinks
- use lighting to enhance your food and drink photography
- produce and evaluate your own food and drink photographs
- explore a variety of food styling techniques to enhance your images.

Please bring your own digital cameras to class. City Lit has a range of digital SLR cameras, tripods and lenses which you are welcome to use during the hours of the class. It would be useful to bring a memory stick (or portable hard drive – please note PC-formatted hard drives can be read by Apple Macs, but not written to). We do also have CDs/DVDs available.

You will be taught through short lectures, handouts, practical exercises, demonstrations, group discussions, and critiques. You may be required to carry out additional reading and practical exercises outside of the classroom. You will also be encouraged to have an online presence to discuss your images during class and receive feedback.

Please note the City Lit uses Apple Mac computers in Photography courses.

Course programme

You will be encouraged to think like a food photographer and explore the best techniques to photograph a variety of different food and drinks. As well as camera skills and the creative aspects of food photography, such as composition and the use of props, you will explore lighting techniques to create mood within your images. You will also learn about different styling techniques, and a few tricks of the trade to enhance your food and drinks in camera (rather than in post production).
