Course programme
Core modules include Study Skills, Maths and IT, as well as an introduction to Forensic Science. Optional modules include Biology and Chemistry, along with laboratory work and replica `scene of crime' analysis.
You do not need any formal qualifications to apply, but you must be aged 19 and above. Communications skills are important in all scientific fields, so applicants will be given a simple diagnostic assessment at the pre-entry interview stage. An interest in science and scientific methodology is a must. International students will be considered if they have equivalent qualifications and experience. Overseas applicants must have scored a 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (with a minimum of 5.5 on each skill).
Assessment is mainly continuous and geared towards the needs of mature learners. The course is 'kite marked' and awarded by OCNLR (Open College Network London Region). The course is fully approved by OCNLR and follows their rules and guidelines.
After achieving the Access to Higher Education Diploma in Forensic Science, you will be free to start a full degree either in Forensic Science or in other science-related courses. City and Islington College offers a Crime Scene and Forensic Investigation FdSc. In addition, the College has special links with London Metropolitan University, City University and the University of East London, where many of our students have gone for further study and qualifications.
