Course programme

Forklift Instructor training is a 10/12 day training course which is undertaken by following the guidelines set by our governing bodies; the RTITB & ITTSARR.

Many companies choose to train using their own instructors. By employing their own instructor they are minimising the costs of sending their forklift operators to an approved training provider. Although this may reduce the costs of training a company is still bound by the requirement for adequate training. It is therefore imperative that a company ensures that their training regime is compliant and their evidence is recorded and available for inspection.

Also, the certificates your trained instructor issue are only valid for your company premises; (unless your company offers accredited training) therefore should the operator cease employment then their certificate would not be valid elsewhere.

Once an instructor has successfully gained the relevant qualification, they will be entitled to enrol on the national register instructors/ examiner, which is compiled by RTITB services Ltd.

The qualification is valid for a period of 5 years, after which, the instructor will need re-register. A Re-Registration course is a 5 day course following the same syllabus as the initial course.

The Course Content includes the following:

  • Healthy & Safety at Work Act
  • Approved Code of Practice (ACOP)
  • Truck Familiarisation and Testing
  • Certification and Authorisation
  • Principles of Instruction
  • Qualities of a Good Instructor
  • Analysing test results
  • Practical Lessons
  • Question and answer techniques
  • Task Analysis and planning of lessons
  • Report Writing
  • Conducting skill tests

To gain an RTITB/ITSARR forklift Instructor qualification the trainee must pass the following examinations:

  • Basic Operators skills test to instructor level
  • Knowledge tests on the course content
  • Complete & demonstrate a classroom lesson
  • Complete & demonstrate a practical lesson
