Although there are no formal entry requirements, trainees must be 16 years of age. All applicants will have a personal interview at the college and with prospective employers.

Foundation Apprenticeship in Hairdressing (NVQ Level 2)
Course summary:
This course is designed to provide a thorough training in basic techniques of hairdressing.
Course content:
Students will complete the following units:
Mandatory Units
G20 make sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
G17 Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
G7 Advise and consult with clients
GH8 Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
GH9 Change hair colour
GH10 Style and finish hair
GH11 Set and dress hair
GH12 Cut hair using basic techniques
Optional Unit
G4 Fulfil salon reception duties
Course structure:
Trainees will be based at a local, approved commercial salon, and will attend college one day per week to augment the training they are receiving at their work based placements.
Qualifications achieved:
Successful trainees will be awarded the Foundation Certificate in Hairdressing. This is a National Vocational Qualification (N.V.Q.) at Level 2 developed by the Hairdressing Training Board and awarded by the City and Guilds of London Institute. It is based upon the practical requirements of the Hairdressing industry.

There is a constant demand for qualified hairdressers who have enthusiasm, energy and ability. Career opportunities occur in the following: Hairdressing Salons, In-store Salons, Hotels, Health Spas, Ocean Liners, Television, Theatre, Salons Abroad, Technical Representative.

Most full-time students do not have to pay for their course. We may also be able to help you with some of the extra costs associated with college, eg travel, childcare, equipment, books etc. In addition, if you have just left school, you may be eligible for an Educational Maintenance Allowance.
