Course programme

This course will give you an introduction to the Cognitive Behavioural Approach and opportunities to look at how it can be applied in a variety of settings to help people evaluate and challenge their thoughts and behaviour and change the way they feel and respond in difficult situations.

The Cognitive Behavioural model is based on the idea that what people think affects how they feel emotionally and physically and can alter the way they behave. In critical and stressful situations, changes take place in the way a person sees and judges them self and the things that happen to them; thoughts and behaviour tend to become more extreme and unhelpful. This can worsen how the person feels and causes them to act in ways that keep their distress going.

CBT aims to help people examine and challenge their thoughts and behaviour, reduce distress and cope better with difficult situations.

The CBT model is increasingly applied in a number of fields ranging from management consultancy to the health and caring professions. This course will give you an introduction to the origins, theoretical model and application of CBT techniques and an opportunity to explore their use.
