Foundation Degree Animal Management (Behaviour and Welfare)
Introduction
This course has been specially designed for students aiming for a career in animal behaviour and welfare. It provides a combination of academic study, with handson training and experience in animal management, and covers a broad base of knowledge and skills.
You will have regular practical contact with animals in our fully licensed zoo. Work in the field will expand your knowledge of animal behaviour and welfare and you will also benefit from our new laboratory and training facilities. You will also enjoy off-site visits to key animal collections and optional international study tours.
The core modules ensure that you gain a good overview of captive animal management. Optional modules will allow you to specialise in your chosen career.
Course Structure
Core modules at Level 1 are designed to develop essential knowledge and skills and include:
- Husbandry of Exotics
- Husbandry and Handling
- Applied Ethology
- Physiology and Genetics of Behaviour
- Animal Welfare Issues
Many of these modules include visits and additional practical opportunities.
Level 2 core modules shift to more research-informed study and include:
- Research Methods and Ethics
- Health and Disease
Additional modules on this pathway include:
- Observational Skills and Data Handling
- Behaviour Modification
- Animal Nutrition
- Negotiated Work-based Learning
